Local antibiotic delivery:
During active periodontal treatment or maintenance, Dr. Sherry may elect to place antibiotics into your periodontal pockets; those areas under the gumline where harmful bacteria live. Local delivery of antibiotics will allow the doctor to painlessly place the antibiotic in the area most likely to benefit, enhancing the effectiveness of the procedure.
Antibiotics delivered in this way slowly dissolve over time, having a longer-term beneficial effect. Systemic antibiotics (taken orally), are used, but may not be the delivery method of choice.
